New York City is home to some of the tallest and most famous buildings in the world and now some ambitious architects are looking to add, longest building, to the rap sheet with “The Big Bend.” “The Big Bend” will be taller than some of the biggest and tallest buildings in the city. Once completed, The Big Bend, will join the ranks of “megatalls” which are buildings that are taller than 1,968 feet.

“The Big Bend” will be a new kind of skyscraper with an unique U shaped structure that’s said to be over 4,000 feet long. This skyscraper will be designed by Ioannis Oikonomou of Oiio Studio. The building will be located on 57th Street, right in the heart of, Billionaires’ Row with the U shape sitting of either side of the Calvary Baptist Church.

When asked about their design, Oiio said, “New York City’s zoning laws have created a eculiar set of tricks through which developers try to maximize their property’s height in order to infuse it with the prestige of a high rise structure. But what if we substituted height with length? What if our buildings were long instead of tall? If we manage to bend our structure instead of bending the zoning rules of New York we would be able to create one of the most prestigious buildings in Manhattan” he continued. “The longest building in the world. The Big Bend can become a modest architectural solution to the height of limitations of Manhattan.”

“The Big Bend” is just in the proposal stages but has been pitched to a number of different potential investors, according to the designer Oikonomou. If completed, the building would stand 200 feet taller than the One World Trade Center which is currently the tallest building in New York City.
